Why have a presale? What is the point of presale tickets?

You might be asking yourself: What is the point of presale tickets?

Why do promoters have a presale to sell some tickets early?

Why not sell all the tickets at once during a public onsale?

Which tickets are part of the presale?

Should you should buy tickets during the presale or wait until they go on sale to the general public?

Let’s try to answer these questions by showing you how tickets can be allotted to various groups and purposes before a concert is even announced on the radio or Facebook.

See, when a concert is announced the ticket allotment has already been decided – often long in advance. The allotment slices and dices the venue or in our case an arena into different groups of tickets for different purposes.

Some are going to be sold during a radio presale, others will be allocated to an American Express presale for Gold and regular cardmembers. Other tickets will be held in reserve by the promoter and others will be given away to radio stations.

A number will be held back for group sales and some will be held for marketing and promotional purposes such as contests (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.)

Here is a simplified example of how tickets to a stadium show might be allotted to different groups and for different purposes. In this example only a small amount of tickets are set aside for presales and promotions – in reality this amount is much higher and can approach 90%.

We will cover these in greater depth in a moment, for now just take a look at how things have been cut apart and set aside for each different presale and group.

For reference we’re using the Little Caesars Arena seating chart so that you can more easily imagine the allotments as they are made between promoter, marketing, special groups, group sales, radio promotions etc etc. Here we go.

Little Caesars Arena Seating Chart

Floor row 1 Marketing and Promotions (Concert promoter use)
Floor rows 2-16 Reserved for VIP Packages (Gold, Silver & Bronze levels)
Floor rows 17-18 American Express Gold Card Presale

Lower level sections 124, 123, 107, 108

Lower level sections 115 and 116 rows 2-20

Venue presale allotment

This is a sample – presales can be 90% of all tickets

In some events a small number of tickets are reserved for presales, but a growing trend has presales for credit cards, venue insiders, newsletter subsribers and facebook fans taking a growing share of tickets before the public has a chance. Some articles have suggested that the amount of tickets pre-sold could be as high as 90%. We have references in case you are curious.

Whats in that VIP Package?

So in the above example (which is just a sample ticket allotment) it becomes clear that the promoter expects to sell a large number of VIP “packages”.

These packages could include a special entrance at the venue, access to a special area with food and drinks, perhaps a meet and greet experience with the band or supporting acts. VIP packages could include merchandise ranging from souvenir lanyards to shirts, wrist/arm bands, hats, rings, lunch boxes, posters, you name it.

There are tickets allocated for group sales but this is not always the case – group sales take time to put together and some promoters may prefer to straight-sell the entire venue instead of allocating tickets for group sales.

The American Express Presale(s)

We have written a great deal about Amex Presales on another page – American Express makes deals with venues and promoters to help their cardmembers to access blocks of tickets for various events. Sometimes these blocks of tickets are “good” and other times the only advantage of an amex presale is obtaining tickets before the public on-sale.

The Amex ticket allotment might include excellent seating locations or it might only include 2nd and 3rd tier ticket inventory – there is no way to know until you see what is available.

Where did those front row tickets go?

Do promoters really make deals with scalpers? (Yes, yes they do.)

Buying tickets online without a presale is painful.“Marketing and Promotions” is pretty vague isn’t it. Promoters can distribute tickets in any way they wish – including giving them away, auctioning them off for charity or selling them to Fan Club members at inflated prices.

Anything still goes in the world of concert promotions and you can be sure that some of those front row tickets are going to go to the band for their friends, entourage, family or whoever.

Front row tickets could be distributed to almost anyone for any reason but the biggest reason these days is money. Ticket brokers figured out a long time ago that a seat in the front row is far more valuable inventory then any other seat in the house. With front row tickets they can sell for triple, quadruple or even ten times face value.

Concert promoters have figured this out and since then they have been packaging “experiences” which include merchandise, meet and greet experiences and special access. Special access can mean backstage access, early entry to the venue, private washrooms or lounge areas etc. These extra perks don’t come cheap though. Be prepared to shell out lots of cash in order to enjoy this kind of VIP experience.

In some cases promoters have sold blocks of tickets to scalpers directly in order to increase their revenues for this premium inventory – in other cases greedy band members have sold their tickets for cash.

Why hold a presale at all? Money. So just what is the point of presale tickets?

The point varies – sometimes it is to give radio stations an incentive to promote the concert: By announcing a special radio presale for their listeners a station makes themselves more attractive to their audience. The audience in turn listens in for the code or joins email newsletters, they will like Facebook pages etc. It’s a carrot dangled out in front to get people to take action.

Speaking of radio stations and promotions – those tickets that you can “call in to win” come from somewhere and you can bet the station isn’t paying. Promoters will give tickets to the station to use as prizes as part of a carefully organized promotional agreement.

As part of the promotion the station will announce the concert, display promotional banners on their website and will engage in promotion of contests, draws and skill games designed to engage with the audience and make tickets more desirable by featuring them as a prize. They keep doing it because it works.

The “marketing” allotment of tickets

This can be a catch-all allotment of tickets that includes promotions and contests, giveaways and freebies, sometimes the band allotment is lumped into this group of tickets. Marketing takes many forms and having some good seats to have a blogger or some music site give away can generate buzz and also goodwill.

All in all there can be few tickets remaining as part of the general public onsale. In some cases under 10% of tickets in the venue are sold to the general public. This fact forces us to ask the question: Which is better, the ticket presale or the public onsale?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 1:14 pm|

How many tickets are there for the public on-sale? How many during the presales?

People ask us sometimes these questions like How many tickets are in a presale? or “How many tickets are left for the public to buy after all the presales are finished?

The music industry doesn’t publicly broadcast how many tickets are going to be made available to American Express or CITI cardholders. After the venue gets a few thousand for their email newsletter, facebook and twitter promotions eat up thousands more. The band has a fan club and those members get the really good seats up front – if the band doesn’t sell them directly to brokers for easy cash.

After all that – there isn’t much left.

As little as 10% of tickets are sold during the public on-sale for a concert.

Why are so few tickets available during the public on sale?

According to research we’ve done there are a number of factors that influence why promoters allocate tickets this way: Maximizing their bottom line is certainly high on the list. People need to make money, and concert promoters are no exception.

Bands might cry about “its all about the music” but they aren’t complaining when they hit the road to packed stadiums and million dollar payouts.

These articles go into great detail about the shady practices at work in the concert industry. Without using a presale to get tickets you really don’t stand much of a chance.

The moral of the story so far: Presales beat Public Sales

To have the best chance of getting tickets, don’t wait for the public tickets to be sold. Get your tickets early and be glad you have a seat to see the show. If you really want to put a good strategy to work you can buy tickets during the presale, attempt to buy more during the onsale and IF you can list the extras for sale and make a little profit yourself.

With demand rising and prices shooting higher and higher you’ll be glad to get in the doors of a concert these days and if you manage to subsidize the cost of your concert tickets by becoming a ticket reseller yourself, why not.

How many tickets are sold during the presales?

Bieber allocated 90% of tickets to presales, insiders, fan club and special credit card holders

According to an article in the New York Post:

Fans who were shut out of One Direction’s sold-out July 2 concert at the Izod Center were very  disappointed-crushed even.

Even before the tickets went on sale to the public, only a small fraction of the 13,687 seats — just 4,474 tickets (32%)— were made available to average ordinary fans. The vast majority had already been earmarked for insiders, presales, fanclub members and members of the band.

While fans are largely left in the dark about ticket distribution (can you see why), the majority of tickets are allocated to the artists, talent agencies, record labels, tour sponsors and fan clubs, according to the Fan Freedom Project, a Washington DC-based coalition backed by secondary market seller StubHub.

No tickets left for the average fan during public on-sale.

In another example from 2011, LCD Sound system went on tour. Now, when a band like LCD Sound system decides to go on tour or stage a residency, a promoter such as Live Nation or Bowery Presents works with them.

The promoter will help to determine where they’ll play and more importantly how tickets will be priced and distributed, often through holds (allotments) for industry insiders and presale programs for companies like American Express and CITI Financial

This is where the majority of tickets are sold, and on average, only 46 percent of tickets remain for the general public.

People become angry when they learn how few tickets remain for public on-sales

Where do the rest of the presale tickets go?

The venue itself — Madison Square Garden or Brooklyn Steel or the like — gets a piece of the fees tacked on to ticket sales, while the vendors — Ticketmaster, Ticketfly, AXS — act as the primary market, making their money from service and convenience fees for an annual value of over $25 billion.

These primary ticketing companies often allow, and even encourage, users to resell tickets, sometimes on their own platforms. What this means is that the ticketing company makes money when tickets are sold and a second time: when tickets are re-sold. Is that double-dipping? Maybe, it all depends on who you ask.

The real trouble is the industry insiders who gain access to piles of tickets at or below face value and who resell those tickets on marketplace sites like StubHub.

Good luck, and remember if you can, buy em early. WiseGuys Has Presale Passwords you can use today.

The Ticket Broker Guide shows you how to flip tickets for quick cash

I’m a bit long-winded here, but keep reading and you’ll soon see how this *could* be the best investment of time that you make today.

If you’re wondering how you can make some extra money in your spare time, with minimal risk and good profit potential, you may have considered re-selling tickets online (via eBay, StubHub or Craigslist). I’m sure that some of you have thought about it because I’ve been asked by a few of our newsletter members and at least two premium members if I had any advice on getting started as a ticket broker.

Let me be honest – I don’t feel qualified to give advice in this area, as I don’t resell tickets for a living! When I do put my own tickets up for sale it’s usually for a major event (Superbowl, Final 4, Major headline tours) and usually I settle for a very small profit, knowing I’ve helped someone else get great tickets at a reasonable price.

You’ve seen auctions for tickets reach thousands of dollars. You might have imagined how good it would feel to hold a pair of front row tickets for a hot show, the smell of money practically wafting off of them. Getting amazing tickets for yourself is one thing, but if you’re going to resell them, there are a whole bunch of questions that come to mind.

It won’t make you much money if you follow my strategy – and it certainly won’t pay the rent – and that’s what someone recently pointed and then asked me if I could recommend a good book or a guide on how to break into the business of ticket brokering.

At the time I came up empty – but that all changed a little while ago.

It turns out that now I can recommend a product that will help you start out as a ticket broker and learn the ropes quickly.

You see, way back in 2008, when WiseGuys was powered by on Blogger, I was asked by a lovely young lady named Brittany Menard if she could advertise her ebook on how to become a ticket broker with a small banner on our site.

She had a good story – having bought her first pair of tickets a few years earlier, gradually reinvesting her profits, buying and selling more and more. She’d learned what worked and what didn’t, had made some very expensive mistakes in the process, but now was doing very well for herself.

I agreed to run the banner ad – she seemed nice, honest, and well meaning – heck I even got to preview the guide, and while it was short, I knew that she was on the right track.

Since then, we’ve lost touch, but since the thoughtful question of how can I make money buying and selling tickets online keeps popping up – I bought a copy to review, hoping that it had gotten better (she emailed me earlier this year to say she’d done a major update).

I was floored by just how much material she’d added and how helpful the information was.

The Ticket Broker Guide  by Brittany Menard is the one thing you need to get your ticket broker business off to a strong start.

Britney helped pay for her education by buying and selling tickets, reinvesting her profits and made a fairly good income in just a few hours a week, out of her dorm room – this is your chance to learn from her mistakes, and from the many tips and tricks that a real home-grown success can share with you.

I can also tell you based on what people search for on our site, and the cities that people are constantly requesting presale codes for – her market resale predictions report is easily worth $50 on it’s own, just knowing which cities offer a solid marketplace for tickets on the secondary market is well worth the cost of the whole package.

This info is now out of date – the whole thing has grown and become even more incredible, now that the ticket broker guide has gotten so great the price has risen too, totally worth it though. Read her tips on buying from ticketmaster.

What’s Included in the GOLD Edition

From what I’ve found – it’s best to read the Ticket Broker Guide first. That will be your starting point to buying and selling tickets and will get your feet wet.

UPDATE: We have a coupon code for The Ticket Broker Guide!

Use code ULTIMATE5 when purchasing The Ticket Broker Guide to save $5 on the purchase price of any edition. Use the code ULTIMATE5, thats ULTIMATE five not Ultimates 🙂 The Coupon doesn’t expire at this point so enjoy it. You use it at checkout when purchasing the ticket broker guide. Great info on how to become a broker and build a business that can really help you grow your income.

Next, review the Market and Sports Resale Predictions. Brittany has analyzed from her own personal experience the top 50 regions in North America, she has New York at number 1, but number 2 and 3 surprised me. An in-depth analysis was done on income levels, population growth, employment and demographics.. you’ll know what cities are worth investing in and which ones should be avoided.

Next, when you start with your very first tickets bought for resale, you’ll want to take a look at the Ticket Sales Tracking Spreadsheet. It looks like a great tool to help you stay organized, track sales, profit, shipping etc.

The 12 NFL Waiting List Reports to get seating charts, ticket prices, waiting list status reports and more for the hottest NFL teams. That’s crucial information if you are looking to buy and resell NFL tickets, as season ticket holders get access to some great seats, post-season opportunities, and in some cases even presales that we can’t publish here on our site.

Now, I tried to talk Brittany into giving you a discount, but she’s already raised the price from $29.95 to $44.95.

UPDATE: The guide alone is now selling for $27, with the “gold bundle” priced at $79) – She’s currently working on an update that could raise the price further. I’ve been told that anyone who buys the 2014 guide will get the newest update when it comes out for free.

I can’t wait to see what she adds to what is an already excellent package of helpful and well-researched information that has helped educate hundreds of people in the business of part-time ticket brokering. While I can’t guarantee you’ll make money with this business, I can guarantee you’ll pick up enough from the guide to buy better tickets for yourself, and you’ll have the confidence you need to buy and resell tickets for a profit.

Wow, that was very long-winded of me – sorry, had lots of good things to say 😀

Oh, and the advice I give most often when people ask me what I would do:

  • Don’t buy anything you wouldn’t go to yourself (in case you get stuck).
  • Don’t buy something in a genre you don’t understand well.
  • Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by pricing your tickets too low or selling too early.

Just good common sense – if you want to make a go of it as a part-time ticket broker, you should invest in a copy of Brittany’s book (which has a 60 day return policy just in case you find it’s not right for you).
